The Certain Promise in a Weary World
As we enter Advent 2020, we do so rather weary in this world where we reside. 2020 has been difficult on all of us. From COVID-19 to riots to the continuing uncertainties of an election year, each of us have grown weary. Perhaps, however, there is considerably more to your weariness than those things. Perhaps you’re struggling with an ongoing illness, or relational difficulty, loneliness, isolation, and disconnection. Perhaps you face ongoing financial hardship or employment concerns. Perhaps you’re very much grieving the sorrowful loss of that which you had hoped and wished for and you doubt the goodness of God and the promise of good in the days to come. Perhaps you are facing something entirely other, something so overwhelming that the weariness of the world feels that it’s choking the life out of you. Wherever you may find yourself at the tail end of this darkened year, the Advent season comes with the light of certain promise in a weary world. Throughout scripture we are taken time and time again to the One who is the joy of all those weary of all that ails them. This Advent season we will take time to consider, amid our teary longings, the wonders of Jesus’ first coming while fixing our gaze ever increasingly at the promise of his second. This Advent may the Spirit shine on our hearts and minds to assure us of our Certain Promise in a Weary World.
