Summary
In our circles, where the pursuit of truth and right thinking is of great importance, there seems to be a dire neglect of the virtue of humility. It is almost as if the chief characteristic of a disciple of Christ has become “rightness” instead of humility. Often, Christians seem more interested in being ‘right’ than humble. Humility does not seem to mark Christians in the eyes of our culture. While our pride has terrible implications for our witness to the world, it does not compare to the dreadful consequences it has against a holy God. This text in Luke implies that God himself will oppose, bring down, and humble the proud. On the other hand, God himself will raise up, honor, and exalt the humble.
The Sermon Text
“Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”” (Luke 14:7–11 ESV)
The Main Point of the Sermon
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God
so that at the proper time he may exalt you
